Senior Legal Officer

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the drafting, review, negotiation, and management of complex commercial, land, construction, financing, investment, and operational agreements, ensuring commercially sound and risk-mitigated outcomes.
  • Provide strategic legal advice and legal opinions to management on corporate, real estate (including condominium law), commercial, regulatory, governance, and project-related matters.
  • Attend to the preparation, execution, attestation and registration of notarial documents relating to the project, including but not limited to sale and purchase agreements, deeds of release, lease agreements & mortgage bonds.
  • Identify, assess, and manage legal and commercial risks across company operations and projects, while developing practical risk mitigation strategies and internal controls.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, Port City regulations, corporate governance requirements, and internal policies, while overseeing regulatory, statutory, and corporate secretarial matters.
  • Act as the key legal liaison with regulators, government authorities, external counsel, consultants, and other stakeholders on legal, policy, and regulatory matters.
  • Lead the management of disputes, claims, litigation, arbitration, and settlement negotiations, while safeguarding the company’s legal, commercial, and financial interests.
  • Provide legal oversight and strategic support for land transactions, asset management, business operations, and major corporate projects.
  • Drive the continuous improvement of legal processes, contract management systems, compliance frameworks, and legal documentation/template standards.
  • Supervise and mentor legal team members, support capability development, and promote legal awareness and compliance across the organization.
  • Contribute to strategic initiatives, policy development, and business expansion projects by providing proactive legal and regulatory guidance to senior management.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • 10 – 12 years of working experience.
  • Attorney-at-Law & Commissioner for Oaths
  • LL.B and/or LL.M
  • Notarial License to practice in the Colombo Judicial Zone
  • Strong commercial, real estate and regulatory background
  • Good command of English both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently
  • Computer literacy
