Colombo Port City sponsors shramadhana
The Port City Colombo supported a shramadhana held recently to clean up the Poruthota fishery anchorage in Negombo and the surrounding beach area.
The community service project was sponsored by the project company through Fishermen Livelihood Support Society (FLSS) on a request made by officials of the St. Peter’s Cooperative Fishermen Society in Poruthota. More than 200 members of the St. Peter’s Cooperative Fishermen Society participated in the shramadhana.
Ranjan Fonseka, Project Manager of the Fishermen Livelihood Support Society (FLSS), who addressed the gathering said that he has been informed by members of the St. Peter’s Cooperative Fishermen Society that garbage mountains due to last year sever flood situation were prolific in the Poruthota anchorage and surrounding area. He added that the top management of the Port City Project had been informed of this problem and they were able to commence the cleanup under the project company’s patronage.
He also thanked officials of the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) and Negombo Municipal Council for their support to make the shramadhana event a success. He also mentioned that more similar events are already planned to carryout in other areas in the future as well.
CHEC Port City Colombo (Pvt) Ltd last month contributed Rs. one million for island-wide beach cleanup programme coinciding the National Marine and Coastal Protection Week organized by MEPA.
